While I enjoy the idea of really getting into the masters from classical art. The truth is I am lazy.
I have fallen into a simple rut with 'art study':
1. Borrow a book from the library that has some of the artists work and let the kids read it (or just browse)
2. Let the kids read Wiki about the artist.
3. Ask the kids to draw or describe on of their favorite works (from wiki or the library book)
4. Try to get a paragraph about the artist. -Put on Timeline.
Unless something amazing jumps out at me when I look for a library book (like "The Yellow House" for Van Gough). Or if the art style looks attempt-able (Matisse cuts), we just don't do any more. (my art skills are severely lacking)
I also get very bored doing the same artist for a full term as AO recommends. Instead we go with a month and fill in the rest of the weeks with any old-ish artist we feel like.
Last weekend was one of those 'baby is sick, mommy has lots of computer time while she nurses/cuddles'. So I planned out the 2011/2012 year of art. The chances of us sticking to it perfectly are pretty nil, but the planning sure was fun. Almost like a puzzle. "Which months are best for modern art? Where would the AO term guy fit best? Who is perfect for Easter time, or Christmas holidays?"
I also managed to get all the plans on a google doc. Not perfect yet, but still fairly easy to see who needs what/when.
I keep the three oldest on the same for everything but writing and math. Those are pure 'at your own speed'.
So far no kid has refused to study an artist. Most of the time they jump at the chance. I am not sure I would insist if they didn't find it interesting though. (and obviously I don't let them see my boredom!)
