Water water everywhere, and not a surface tension video in sight...

Monday in Co-op the kids had tons of different surface tension fun with water.  I thought I would follow up sometimes this week with some science videos.  (I like videos as a reward for a calm clean house after dinner).

Turns out that is harder than I thought.  I tried youtube, no luck (though there are plenty on frequency - one to many high pitched sound tracks turned me off the whole attempt).

Then I tried this site hoping for something with the magic school bus.  Instead I found Bill Nye the science Guy on the Water cycle.  Very fun, but still not the right topic.

Ah well one day I may find the right thing.

In the meantime we also tried (and failed) to make a cloud.  I must not be a cool enough to make it work.

We also collected water on wax paper, since Wax paper repels water the droplets all form mostly balls that you can move around and play with.  The kids thought it was great fun.

Our 'science gal' from co-op helped us use soap to scare off pepper (soap breaks the water tension) and dropped pins into a cup so that the water would rise above the top edge.  Oh and used a paper towel twisted up as a 'bridge' to get water from one bowl to another (much the way a plant takes water from it's roots - maybe).

I did find a collection of cool fun with water, the site is not family friendly, though all the videos are.  You might want to read the science then open the videos in a separate window for the kids 5 scientific ways to make water do magic.

  1. That's the worst, when you know there should be a good, kid friendly video for something, and you just can't find it. I kind of feel that way about Columbus.

  2. cool! I did the soap and pepper thing at Pizza Hut once to amuse my kids and the waitress was amazed (why didn't she learn that in science class?)
