Today we discovered a new verse we needed.
Little Man has a bad habit of repeating a wrong answer over and over. For example a simple mistake of 6 plus 6 is eleven. He hasn't memorized his simple addition yet. I never bothered to make him, and he hasn't bothered. He does use interesting ways to find answers other than just counting on his fingers.
Apparently he had decided that since he knew 5 and 5 is 10 and 6 was one more the answer must be one more. Makes sense but doesn't take into account that there are two 6's in 6 plus 6, needing the answer to be two more.
Explaining these sorts of shortcuts confuses lots of kids (and adults) so I never do, I just try to be aware of them and when kids make mistakes trying I point out how they almost had it.
Anyway back to the truth problem, when I said nope not 11, he said YES it is, and repeated 6 plus 6 is eleven multiple times. No amount of me suggesting he look at it better or that he show me would help. This is not an isolated incidence, he loves insisting he was right the first time, and hates to make any mistakes.
I have begun telling him that repeating a lie wont make it true, and decided to see if there were anything useful in his bible. I had forgotten he only has a story bible, so nothing specific on Lies. I tried to remember one off the top of my head and came up with 'the Truth shall set you free'. Since he was certainly locking himself into a prison of cranky 'can't/won't think I figured an analogy of being set free was a good one.
Turns out I was missing a bit of the verse, and of course it has been taken out of context, but in this case I don't think I am teaching the kid wrong so I will let it be. (full text of chapter 8)
John 8:32 "Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
Previous verses we have worked on as a family: (in no particular order)
Deuteronomy 6:5 "Love the Lord your God with all your hear, with all your soul and with all your might"
Philippians 2:14 "Do everything without complaining or arguing"
John 1:1a "In Principio Erat Verbum" ( from the Latin course, In the beginning was the word)
Psalm 100:1 "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands"
Hebrews 13:16 "Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God"
2 Thessalonians 3:10 "For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule; if a man will not work, neither shall he eat"
Ephesians 6:1 "Children obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right"
Proverbs 6:6 "Go to the ant thou sluggard, consider her ways and be wise"
Genesis 1:11 "Then God said 'Let the land produce plants let them bear their own seeds. And let there be trees on the land that bear fruit with seeds in it. Let each kind of plant or tree have its own kind of seeds.' And that's exactly what happened." (we only really memorized the gist of this one)
As to how, we quiz each other on current and favorite past verses, by the time I have checked in with all 3 of the older ones I pretty well know the verse for the week. (Though Dude often learns them faster than I do.) So far we choose verses rather haphazard,(isn't everything here?) I am not even good at doing it on a specific day. When the right verse pops up and it has been around a week, we use the new one.
um, how about the commandment on lying? Is that an appropriate verse?
