Why schedule?

I have always tried to keep peace between my two sides.  The one a Type A regimented schooler, the other a unschooler who loves random learning.

Most of the time I manage not to sound like I have MPD (multiple Personality Disorder), partly because I keep most of the arguments silently in my head.

The rest of the time I blame my 'discussions' with myself on Parent teacher conferences.  Regular schoolers get to have them, why can't I?  Though which of my personalities is the parent and which the teacher I'll never know.

Generally I have found the balance lies in scheduling all the regimental lady in me wants in the morning, and allowing the free for all unschooler the afternoons.

Today I sat down yet again to try and figure out our schedule.  Between co-op, robotics, scouts, art class, and legos the days are already half done.  Throw in meals, clean up and nap and you are almost out of time for all the academic stuff!

So why schedule it all?  Because if I didn't most wouldn't get done.  This doesn't mean I order every part of the day.  In fact one of the main reasons I schedule is so the kids have large blocks of free time (to appease the unschooler in me).

I would love to have a short simple schedule I could share with you easily, but since each day has an outside class/co-op/scout/robot group at various times, my schedule changes from day to day.  Add in the fact that there are 4 children who need educated, plus both a Mom and Dad fighting for un-interrupted computer time, and you have a recipe for a scheduling disaster!

Ah well for the 7 day version there is a new page called 'schedule' (subject to change at any time due to any reason, nothing is set in stone, all must be adjusted based in what works best for all 7 of us)
