We have a pool in the community, cost is covered by our HOA Fee. A fee I can't get out of.
So we pay for it, and we use it plenty. Over the last 7 years it has mostly been me going swimming with the kids. (Daddy being at work most of the time)
I want the kids to be confident in the water. I want them to be able to swim, tread water, float, and have a good time. To that end I started teaching them from day one. These goals are important enough for me to insist whether they want to or not.
I managed to teach all the older three how to float on their backs, tread water, and dog paddle. We also had a great deal of fun. We are still working on the 2 year old, and 2 month old.
What I never managed to teach was how to do the freestyle or any other 'real' method of swimming. Mostly the trouble is, I can't swim.
This summer we have had Daddy around for many swimming trips. He knows how to swim, so for the first time a knowledgeable person is around for them to learn from. So far no one seems to want to work on swimming. Daddy spends more time tossing kids in, helping them stand on his shoulders, or letting them hang on his back while he swims.
Sigh. The closest we came to teaching the kids to swim, is that Daddy had a race with Dude. Daddy used the backstroke while Dude kept us usual 'elementary backstroke' (the regular one looks like freestyle arms but backwards. the elementary is just 'pushing' the water toward your feet.) Daddy of course won by a mile. They next raced where Daddy only used his feet, Dude could swim however he wanted. Daddy barely made it across before Dude.
Daddy's goal was to show Dude how important an efficient stroke is for speed.
After Daddy headed off to rescue Baby Girl, I watched Dude play around with both arm styles. He seemed to be trying to figure out how and why the backstroke is so much faster. I can't guarantee it, but I am fairly certain Dude will be playing around with strokes and might be more interested in learning.
Does it count as unschooling that I won't force him? Or is the fact that I am contemplating the best way to convince Princess to want to learn make be a terrible traditional schooler?
