I borrowed Lives of the Musicians from the library. I got the idea after seeing several of Kathleen Krull's books on Almost Unschooling. (love her blog for great ideas!)
Being the boring sort, we started with chapter one: Antonio Vivaldi. Turns out he had red hair, I like him even better now! He also seemed to be a priest, though one that never 'said mass' That may mean more to a catholic than me. He also worked with children teaching violin and was at times rich. Though apparently not a very good money manager since he died poor, his music out of style.
I find it surprising every time I hear about a classical composer, or artist, who was not well regarded at so many other points in history (Vivaldi was voted most boring 1984!)
Funny thing is, almost all 'classical' artists and composers (and even authors) were considered boring or at least not very good at one point or another. I prolly aught to stop being surprised about it.
Regardless we found a couple youtube videos my favorites are from Disney's old fantasia here is:
Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter . I also discovered it is really hard to find any of Vivaldi's work that is not the 4 seasons! You basically have to know the name of the concerto
Next week I hope to listen to the podcast from 'classics for kids' and maybe get into some art or dance.
