Pilgrims progress is on the recommended reading list for year 2 and 3 of Ambleside Online. I recall attempting to read the long boring tale of a Christian traveler in my teens. I think I had just finished and enjoyed, little Women, If I recall correctly the 'little women' read enjoyed and even acted out scenes from Pilgrims progress.
When I found out it was recommended I kinda dreaded having to open the book. But I figured everything is worth trying. I soon found out the kids enjoyed the book! Some weeks the 1000 or so words we read were pure boring, others they were full of silly tales of 'talkative' and 'by-ends'..
My kids remarked that the author of the book aught to be called talkative. He can't say anything simply!
This week while reading I asked the kids what their name would be if they were named like folk in pilgrims progress. Dude chimed in almost immediately with 'Mr. Crazy'. He later decided he must be Crazy Jr since Daddy deserved Mr Crazy first.
Little Man quickly added that he was 'Master Whiner'!
It took awhile to come up with a good name for Princess. We settled on 'Fury', since the mean sound she makes so often can't be spelled.
Baby Girl was given the name 'Sweet', she really can be ......sometimes.
And I was so honored to find out they choose the name 'Nicely' for me! Meanly is more what I expected since I am the terrible mom who insists on so many chores and such.
Our newest Little One was deemed to young to get a real nickname. We will have to see once she is older and shows more personality. Though so far Giggles is rather accurate.
