WJ testing

NC Law requires some form of assessment testing every year.  We have always used the Woodcock Johnson test as it provides actual information on what type of Math or Reading the kids are strongest, and weakest at.  (plus penty of information in between)
This year both Princess and Dude took the WJ test.

Dude tests off the charts in Math, so in spite of taking this type of test for more helpful specific information, the closest we come is that he wants to know Trigonometry.  (in memory of my mother I told him he had to finish algebra first)

Reading wise he tests great, though he still hates sounding out words, in his book he either knows the word or he doesn't.  Fortunatly he knows a great deal of words. (same for spelling)

We will be working on more reading outloud to catch more of his mistakes (I know I said that last year, but..we are working on it, test scores did go up from last year)

Princess tests great in both Math and Reading, slightly higher in reading.

Her biggest troubles are in Spelling  and speed computation (tested just at grade level).  We will be looking into different methods for spelling, and maybe some games for computation.

One of the reasons we love this test is it checks math skills (IE can you divide) seperate from speed (how fast can you divide)  We Know her math skills are rather good, but we also know she STILL counts on her fingers for addition!

Having the tester show her the difference and the score really helped her decide to work on speed (and spelling).  Which is far more helpful than me just telling  her to!

Little Man did not have to take the test by law, while it would be interesting we can't afford that sort of thing.  However if you are cuious I am fairly certain he would test great in both.  I bet he has the same speed weakness, and his handwriting skills would hold him back overall (though he can spell about as well as Pricess!)

Baby Girl is of course too little for the test (though they can and do test 2 year olds)  She is starting to write some basic letters like O and L on her own.  Mostly she plays with Math and Reading concepts, though she has her 'workbooks' that she insists on doing every day!

Little One crawled up the slide yesterday!  She can also stand for short periods.  Still tiny, and adorable, we keep waiting for real words.
