Weekly wrap up

I have read so many interesting wrap ups over the past few weeks.  I think it is fun to look at a slice of someone else's life and see what they are doing.  Sometimes I get a good idea, sometimes I feel guilty for not doing anywhere near as cool science, and others I just plain giggle at.  It is good to know I am not the only one with crazy kids!

This time I am actually writing one of my own, I thought it would be an interesting thing to look back on sometime next year.  I also think writing prompts are great.  I have an over active imagination, I might be here typing for hours without the wonderful limits implied with 'the best'  (meaning leave out second through 500th place please)

In My life this week..err my life?  I have a life?  Outside of kids? Ah, Well, Um,
Still thinking here.

Oh I read Percy Jackson and the 'Last Olympian'.  I mean it is kinda a kid book, and I was waiting till my son finished a few books before I requested it.  And I partially read it because I like to at least browse what the kids are reading.  But really I devoured it in one morning because I loved it.
Though the charm of his offhanded style is wearing thin.

In Our homeschool this week:
All the kids have been finishing their work in record time.  Princess seems mostly out of the molasses phase (quick find some wood to knock on!)  Baby Girl has been absolutely adorable working on reading and counting, while Little One mostly lets me have time to focus.  But we didn't do anything amazing or extraordinary.  Same old same old.  The kids free time hasn't even been spent in any particularly interesting ways, plenty of building, drawing, stunt practice, and  a little computer fun.

Places we are going and people we are seeing:
We had some great company over last week, a sleepover for Princess this week, and made a trip to Discovery Place.  I wasn't inspired with a great place to go today though.  Partly because I wanted to sleep in!
Sometime in the next month or two I hope to visit TownCreek Indian Mound.  And with all the work Dude is doing for space, a planetarium is in order, maybe Scheile?

My favorite thing this week:
Would I be a terrible mom if I said curling up with a book for nearly 4 hours?  If so then scratch that and try checking out the adorable 'worksheet' Princess made for and completed with Baby Girl.  It featured a large letter L and P, with various drawings by her for each letter.  Included was a Lemon, Lamp, Pig, Pot, and 'person'.  After drawing each she helped Baby Girl draw a line to the beginning letter.  Very cute.
Most worksheets are tossed in the recycle bin once checked, but this one I thought I would keep around.

What is working/Not working for us:
I started writing down everything they need to do in one week in a notebook, then all they have to do is check the page to see what to do, one spot, no sharing (I had it on a sheet with all their info together before) and they often do the work in the same notebook.  Making it only one thing I have to keep track of to check.  Seems to be going well.   (for a whole three weeks)

Am I the only one who has trouble keeping track of what they did/need to do in one day?  Maybe because we keep trying and scrapping the 'math time for one kid' and just keep coming back to 'quiet work time' for all.  This means no keeping track of a clock (till lunch) but it also means I never know what they are doing (unless I look over their shoulder).  I like the independence it gives them, I hate trying to keep track of it all.

Homeschool Questions/ thoughts that I have:
I am trying to fill Science.  Dude is set with the science olympiad, even though he is only doing three 'topics' he is getting such a deep understanding of them, I don't feel the need to add in.  I tried to talk Princess into working with him on one or two, but I really don't feel it is something I want to force her into.  So she and Little Man need more, and they need it free and simple.

Sadly I can't share a photo as our cameras are not playing nice with our computers.  :(
instead enjoy this 'MS paint' 'drawing by Little Man.

  1. Sounds great. I like the contract idea for what the kids need to get done. I've been looking at a new science and history curriculum also. Am thinking of using one that is for all ages (even tho I don't have as many as you do) and you just expect more retention from the older one.

  2. I love the drawing from your son. How creative! You're absolutely NOT a terrible mom for saying that curling up on the couch with a good book for a few hours was your favorite this this week. :)

Thanks for joining me in the journey.

    Blessings,
    Sue
