First of all, the movie is nothing like the book.
Amazingly the movie is better!
The book is fine written with rather easy words, short sentences and short chapters full of simple pencil drawings. Little Man has no trouble with the words, though there are a few too many over all for him (he is young)
But, it throws in far to many 'potty' type jokes. Nothing to make me stop the reading entirely (that would take something big, I prefer to let my kids make their own decisions wherever possible).
The movie itself throws in a 'love interest' of course (there is some sort of rule in Hollywood that all movies must have a love interest) And completely changes the culture. Vikings are at war with dragons, so they learn to fight them, not train them. The hero of course has a chance to train one and between them they manage to save the day, and stop the war. It is actually rather nifty the way they explain how they learn to work together.
Little Man is now on 'How to cheat a Dragons Curse' and I am hoping it is the last. I really don't enjoy hearing about 'Big Boobied Bertha'. Though my husband who has been reading the books with Little Man fills me in on the interesting story line.
I almost hope the make a movie sequel using some of the good parts and none of the bad.
I haven't seen the movie and didn't realize there was a book. Who wrote it?
ReplyDeleteMy kids stopped after a couple of the books. But, I liked the little dragon in the first book, better than the one in the movie. He has such a funny, little dragon, bad attitude. The children liked the movie much better, though.
ReplyDeleteWe saw the movie first and then let my 7 year old get out the book because he loves the movie. He read a few pages and then came to me and said Mom this book has yucky stuff in it we shouldn't read it. I was impressed with his discernment.
ReplyDeleteCressida Cowel wrote the books
ReplyDeleteand yeah I liked many little details from the books better. I love the updates I get after a reading session, it really is a cute story. Just 'Norbert the Nutjob' really?
I have neither seen the movie nor read the book, but now I am intrigued.
ReplyDeleteWe just got a book, and to be honest I had no intention to see a movie any time soon. Now I am intrigued too. Thanks for joining WMCIR!
