Finally found some nature

The very next day after my complaint on not finding nature, we went for a short walk and found nature at almost every turn!

First we found this gi-normous fly like thing.  Dude had to run back to the house for a camera, he so wanted to save the photo and put it on FB.  I left my shoe in for comparison (mens size 8.5).  The other day while working on a nature project Dude used google images to discover what it was.  A cicada, I am sure anyone with half a nature brain would know that, but I had only ever seen their shells.

You know that skin they leave sticking to trees?  This marks the first time for me to see a whole (ish) one.  It was obviously dead, but mostly in one piece.  Later on we found one that was quite a bit less well preserved..

Barely a block later we found this butterfly that had to have been paralyzed or something.  It just sat there, even when Baby Girl rushed over to see.

I was unable to get very close to the bugs because of holding Little One in the sling, but for all that you can at least tell what I am taking a photo of.  I think.

We stopped to check out a few worms, ants and watch the birds in the sky.  Then when we came to this tree the kids insisted we take a picture because Dude is certain it is a baobab tree (it isn't).  So here is the picture,

....and here I go googling it .....Yeah not a baobab tree(adansonia).  Hmm, so what is it?  I tried this tree identifier and discovered I know nothing about trees, but it is definitely NOT a pecan tree.  Then I followed this link to a 'test' (click to start animation) you chose one of their mystery samples and then follow the directions to identify it.  I think we may have the same kind of tree as the sample I choose, making it a honeylocust.  Though I won't put money on it.  Regardless the kids now have a fun new game to play.

Right as we made it back home the kids found a small caterpillar on the driveway.  No idea what kind.  No surprise there.

Well there you have it.  The not so wide range of nature here.
