Corny cop, and an old fashioned big guy.

AmblesideOnline has the story of Paul Bunyan and Pecos bill assigned in the first few weeks.

I borrowed one of their recommended versions, but found I was rather low on the list.  So I checked out a couple different versions.  When 'American Tall tales' by Adrien Stoutenburg finally came I read the two stories to the kids.

I kinda prefer the variety from the library.  The kid books had larger print and fun silly illustrations.  Adriens version was nice, but the print small and no real new information.  Having several versions let the kids see how Tall Tales can vary from teller to teller, but still contain the same basic ideas.

Here is one of the Paul Bunyan versions: My story
And on of the Pecos Bill stories: by Steven Kellog

I didn't read any of them, so I can't really comment fully.

We happened to have some indoor time to kill one day so I found an old Disney cartoon of Paul Bunyan on YouTube.  I highly doubt if my kids were used to modern fast paced cartoons they would have liked it.  A very slow easy going story about a the big guy.

And on Hulu there is Shelly Duvall's Pecos Bill.  A very corny low budget film.  My husband and I laughed all the way through at the silly antics and cheap theater props.  The acting was of surprisingly good quality.  Pecos Bill is played by the main funny cop in police academy.

Unfortunately not all the stories in the Adrien version are available as children's picture books or easy readers.  So we will have to read his version alone for some.
