I borrowed a version of Beowulf retold by Nicky Raven from the library. When Dude started telling me the story, I realized I had either never finished the book or forgotten far too much!
Princess was quick to chime in with her comments, so I guess the both enjoyed this version.
I decided I had better read it myself to keep up with the kids!
This particular version has lots of beautiful illustrations by John Howe on most pages.
Little Man has been reading "Field Trips" with Jim Arnosky I quickly skimmed through the pages. In simple writing with quaint drawings the author describes all kinds of trips and what sort of info he noticed at each place and how he recorded it. It seems to break down nature journaling into simple manageable sketches.
Dude has also been reading "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", while Princess is on "The Chamber of Secrets" She would like to catch up, but I actually hope she doesn't. Would be very neat to have had a kid close to 11 when the first book came out so they would be growing with Harry. I don't feel artificially staging the books worth my effort, but it would be kinda cool.
I am linking this up at Mouse Grows Mouse Learns.
I've never read Beowulf in modern English - and it's been a looong time since I've read any version at all...maybe this winter.
ReplyDeleteThe version we read was actually pretty good. well, interesting anyway. I only read up to the fight with Grendel in old English, and that was a looong time ago. (not that I am old or anything...)
ReplyDeleteI've never read any version of Beowulf, but then I didn't grow up in local culture. Both my husband and I are rereading Harry Potter 7 because of the movie, and Anna keeps asking when she will be old enough to read it too. Well, not at 5, but I am really looking forward to the time when she is old enough to do it.
