Simple Math addition game

Today Dude decided to play a math game from the 'Family math, The Middle School Years' book by Virginia Thompson that we borrowed from a good friend.

The directions seemed a bit confusing at first (perhaps cause they were read to me by an 8 year old?)  the gist is you place 2 cards down face up, then take turns drawing a card and placing it at either end. Aces are worth 1, face cards 10.  All others face value.

If on your turn you can use 2 or 3 cards from either end, or a combination of both ends, to make 10 or 20 you get to keep those cards.

The game ends when you have used up the whole deck and you cannot make any more groups of 10 or 20.

Someone will have to let me know if that makes sense enough to play.

While the concept of addition is quite simple and Dude is very fast at it, the actual skill of looking at all the options was a challenge for him.  I stole several plays from him that he simply overlooked.  Princess played the second round, she really needs the practice at speed for this one.  I helped her find options and didn't steal any.

The family math book is a nice compilation of games and ideas to help kids understand basic graphing, algebra, and other interesting math topics.  Dude has enjoyed most of the activities.  The only thing missing to make it a full math program is the drilling and reviewing.

While hunting the link to the book I discovered there are other books in the series.  I might have to check some out for the younger kids
