Last night at dinner we were asking the kids questions. Generally this is a way to convince them to giggle less and chew more - because if you are not eating on the other kids turns, you don't get a question of your own.
So on Dudes turn I asked "Do you have a question for him?" Now I meant for my husband to make one up, he has been doing more of the math checking lately. I had run out of things that would be difficult enough.
Little Man thought I meant him, and said, "What is 1 times 8?" Now that would be way to easy, so I helped Little Man answer it himself.
Mom: "If we had one boy with eight cars, how many cars would we have all together?"
Little Man: "......Nine."
Mom: "Umm no, not one and eight, just eight for the one boy."
Little Man: "Eight?"
Mom: "yeah......." Obviously he didn't get it. So dad took a turn.
Dad: "If I gave you eight peas every day, how many peas would you have after one day?"
Little Man: "8!" We could see the light bulbs going off!
A few minutes later, after other kids had some questions, Little Man had more to add.
"If you get six peas every day then after one day you have six peas!"
No guarantee he can pass a timed test on multiplying by one, but he certainly has a good start.
Oh and yes, the kids did manage to chew plenty and go outside to play.
