Rationalizing facebook

Yeah I am addicted to facebook, I check my live feed every day, or hour. I play too many games (need neighbors in happy habitat if you're available). And I mindlessly update how my day is going. I know it is a big waste of time, but it is also educational.

One game called 'Word hunt 2009' gives you 5 words to create from a list of letters in virtual 'tray'. You collect these letters from friends or webpages that have allowed the app. Of course the more friends the more possible letters. At first glance the game is so mindless (click letters, fill tray let the computer spell them, submit) it couldn't be educational.

Ah but the trick is you get more points for each consecutive word submitted without collecting new letters. So it pays to fill your tray with only the letters you need (you only have room for 36). Which means we have to remember which letters we need to go search for them. since I have no memory, I have to make words out of the missing letters. Which I find the kids doing for me now. For example of my 5 words I still need a c, r, i, e, x, t, n. So we go hunting for arc-i-next. I never said I was any good at scrabble, just that it is educational to try! Of course on my next collection run I may find a t, e, x: leaving me to search for c-rain. By then end of a string of 5 words we can make up all sorts of odd words.

Then there is the more obvious geochallenge, or wordchallenge. The first asks you to place country flags with names, as well as place 'pins' on a map for capitals, landmarks and famous cities. The second is the typical 'spell as many words as you can from these six letters'. Dude holds 4th place of all my friends in the geochallenge (under my name). The only trouble is he needs my computer to play!

There you have my rationalization for using facebook, education!

Now I have a status to update, then I need to hunt for 'pa'.
