AO year one personal notes FB import

This is a personal note about year one, since I will have to do it again, I want to keep track of what I like, and what I would do differently. If I have said nothing about a book, or story I prolly have no objection to it.

Age-Honestly the wait rather than hurry I agree with, while Dude at 7 was a smidgen beyond some things, he was right on par for others, Princess at 5 was a smidgen young for some and on par for others. Though I of course never refuse to teach my kids, I do not think 'year one' is equal to first grade (least not the way the US does first grade) so even though my kids are advanced in many ways, I am glad I didn't start till Dude was almost 7. Though with him and Princess being so close in age, I wont be repeating the year for Princess, just letting her go along with him. We shall see how that turns out in later years.

Science - we do more than recommended, but we like it a lot.

Required books:
Paddle to the sea - Next time I would like to copy the map before we start reading, that way we can tell Daddy about it at dinner, and show him. (excellent book btw)

Blue fairy book - Several stories I do not like, I will prolly skip them the second time around. I do like their version of Beauty and the beast though, also fond of Prince Darling. here are the stories I strongly dislike:
1. Master Maid, just convoluted and not worth it, I wouldn't want to marry her after that.
2. East of Sun West of moon, brings up conversations of bedding that I just think are too early, editing is possible though not sure the story is worth the effort.

Nature Parables - not to fond of the restraint one about flowers, I do like the others
Just so stories - very worthy read, but the alphabet story is too long, even for me! read the first part, skim the details of her alphabet.
50 famous stories - worth acquiring the 'real' book eventually.
Burgess bird book - no idea about any of the birds around here, but the basic knowledge is cool.
Handbook of nature - not an easy read for mom, not easy to follow 'lessons'..I prefer eyewitness movies and books, plus some library finds, gives me something to enjoy hunting. I might not be getting a true CN nature education out of it, but hey we enjoy ourselves. (oh we also do plenty of looking at whatever nature we can find, it just doesn't tend to be much along the AO list, so we read the AO recommended study, we look at whatever God gives us)
Trial and Triumph - this was the smidgen beyond Princess, though it starts out painful with martyrs, I honestly think the history is worth it, though of course it is slanted history. (all history is really)
Aesop's Fables - better online, that way you can read any old one you like, any collection is shortened greatly. I love the big old words used in my link.
Beautiful stories of Shakespeare I like the Nesbit version better than Lamb's. We often borrow a movie to go along if we can.
James Harriot I prefer audio, for the accent :)
Poetry I like RLS, Milne is ok I guess, just found Oxford, there must be something good in the book, but, haven't found it yet.
Our island Story I love the libvrovox recording, but it stopped working on my computer, :(
Viking Tales Not fond of the format the online version but I do enjoy the stories

Recommended list:
Pocahontas - good read
Peter Pan - nice, but not like the movies...Old fashioned, and a bit to much info assumed readers know on 'thimbles'
Pinocchio - starts off bad, but he learns better. If it weren't so popular for folk to know him I would skip, but not happy with kids only knowing him from Shrek...I read with a lot of personal commentary.
Red Fairy book - I suspect I would dislike it as much as the Blue, so not bothering to borrow it.
Velveteen Rabbit - kids make it to 6 without having read this one?
Charlottes web - again kids make it to 6 without having read this one?
King of the golden river -very long, nice, but oh so long. I think the author was paid by the word or something.
St George and the Dragon - Dude read and I didn't get to, eventually read a different version, nice story.
Little House in the big woods - We read as a family, but Lil Princess also read by herself this year, save till end if you want kid to read, one year makes a big difference in reading ability.
